Mills, Brian, and Fort, Rodney. "Stationarity and Team-Level Major League Baseball Attendance Analysis." Working Paper, October, 2010. Under consideration at the Economic Inquiry. 17 manuscript pages. PDF
Abstract: We extend sports attendance time series research to team-level attendance for current Major League Baseball teams. We find that the time series for all but six current teams are trend stationary or stationary with endogenously determined breakpoints. In addition, there appear to be impacts on the attendance of some teams due to strikes. This suggests 1) care in team level-data analysis (panel regressions), 2) a method like first differences for the remaining six teams, and 3) significant insights can be gained by assessing the significance and qualitative impact of break points on attendance at the team level in subsequent work.
